Located in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand, Taumarunui to the north, Ohakune, Raetihi & Waiouru in the south and Waimarino, Owhango and Raurimu in the middle. Situated middway between Wellington and Auckland, it is easily accessible with SH4 in the north and SH49 running through its southern end. The main trunk railway line passes through the district with the famous Raurimu Spiral an engineering masterpiece middway through the district.
The Ruapehu District Council region's nearest cities are Whanganui, Taupō and Palmerston North. The district has a permanent population of around 13,500 people. This number swells during the winter ski season and at the peak of summer.
