Situated 215km from Wellington, 292km from Auckland and 513km from Christchurch, Ohakune is easily accessible with State Highway 49 running through its southern end and the North Island main trunk railway line passing along the northern edge.

Ohakune is part of the Ruapehu District Council region and the nearest cities are Whanganui and Palmerston North. The township has a permanent population of around 1000 people. This number swells to 7-10,000 during the winter ski season.
